Visual identification is the cheapest and easiest way to collect data on sharks and rays at landing sites and fish markets or to quickly check whether a shipment of shark and ray products requires paperwork (e.g., permits under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna [CITES]). The identification guides below have been created to assist fisheries, enforcement officials, and other stakeholders (including divers) to visually identify sharks and rays in a variety of forms (whole animal, whole carcasses at landing sites, processed carcasses, and derivative products (e.g., fins, gill plates). They have been developed in collaboration with a range of organizations and with colleages from around the world. We make them freely available online to ultimately improve data collection on sharks and rays, assist with enforcement, and support conservation efforts. Many of these are also available in several languages (e.g., Arabic, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Bahasa Indonesia, and Chinese) online at www.citessharks.org
